THE SHORT ANSWER
If lead is a concern, look for an exact point-of-use or pitcher model certified for lead reduction, follow its installation and replacement instructions, and address the underlying plumbing question separately.
Know why a system report is not the whole answer
Lead can enter drinking water from service lines and household plumbing. A public system's annual report is useful background, but a sample collected elsewhere cannot describe every faucet in your home.
If you want to investigate your own water, ask the utility or health department how to collect an appropriate sample and interpret it. Do not use taste, appearance, pH, or a total-dissolved-solids meter as a lead test.

Check the exact product listing
EPA provides a consumer tool for point-of-use and pitcher filters evaluated by accredited certifiers for lead reduction. Match the whole model and cartridge, rather than assuming a brand's entire range performs alike.
Check capacity, installation conditions, and whether the product also needs a particulate reduction claim. Ask to see a performance sheet and keep a copy with your purchase record.

A filter works only with proper care
Use the manufacturer-approved cartridge and replace it on the stated schedule. An indicator light is helpful, but if there is none, record the installation date and gallons used as the instructions require.
If installation involves a dedicated faucet or refrigerator line, confirm which outlets receive treated water. Someone using the ordinary tap by mistake would not receive the treatment you intended.
Treat the cause as well as the tap
A point-of-use filter can be an exposure-reduction measure; it does not remove lead-containing plumbing. Ask the utility or a qualified plumbing professional about the service line and fixtures when appropriate.
For an infant, pregnancy, or another health-specific concern, seek guidance from a healthcare professional or public health agency rather than relying on a sales claim.
